Lodge Profile

The Salopian Lodge of Charity (SLOC) was consecrated in 1810, and is one of 36 Masonic lodges in the Province of Shropshire warranted by the United Grand Lodge of England. It was originally formed by The Shropshire Militia and is proud of its military history and connections. The SLOC meets at Freemasons Hall, Crewe Street, Shrewsbury SY1 2HQ – formerly St Michael’s Church. The meetings are held monthly, usually on the fourth Wednesday of each month from September to April inclusive, although in December it is the second Wednesday to enable us to celebrate Christmas.

The evening begins at 1815h with a Ceremony or an educational presentation followed by other Lodge business. This is followed at about 2000h by a formal meal called the Festive Board, and the evening normally ends by about 2200h.

Rehearsals for Ceremonies are held normally on the Wednesday evening the week before each meeting and Brethren who are involved are encouraged to attend. New members are included early on and follow a well-structured progression which ultimately will lead them to become (if they so wish) Worshipful Master of the Lodge for a year. In time, Brethren will be encouraged to visit other Lodges, perhaps join other Orders and/or do other work according to their inclination and abilities. There are many prominent local masons in this Lodge of roughly 60 members and they have a proud record of excellent ritual performance.

In addition to Masonic meetings, the Lodge holds social events and informal gatherings, and often supports those held by other lodges and the Province. Partners and friends are often welcomed to these. Money raised by the Lodge is donated to its own charities, to the Shropshire funds and also to the national Masonic charities resulting in substantial donations to many worthy causes.

SLOC’s membership is drawn from many different backgrounds, welcomes different Faiths and a broad age range. It is an important rule, however, that religion and politics should never be discussed at a Masonic meeting. Experienced members are tasked with supporting new Brethren through our Mentoring system.

Above all, we enjoy our Masonry and welcome good men from all backgrounds. Masonry is an enjoyable experience and you will find our members are entirely in accord with that.
