Lodge Profile

The Salopian Lodge No 262 is the oldest in the Province and has a wealth of traditions and history that go with such a position. Its first meeting was held on 3rd July 1788 at The Fox Inn, once situated on the Square in Shrewsbury. It then spent its first 100 years or so moving from pub to pub! Amongst its alumni it proudly lists Thomas Telford, Robert Darwin (father of Charles), Sir Offley Wakeman, John Carline and many others of renown for service to country and community. Through many of these worthy brethren we hold strong historical connections with our community, not least in being responsible for laying the foundation stone of the Lord Hill Column on Abbey Foregate in December 1814, much of the craftwork on which was carried out by Stonemason and Freemason John Carline, a member of 262 and Worshipful Master five times between 1812 and 1817. As a lodge we pride ourselves in embracing all the masonic values of fellowship, integrity and compassion. We number members from diverse professional, religious and social backgrounds all of whom are equally welcome. Amongst our members we have a contingent of “Blood” bikers, academics, businessmen and legal and medical professionals. We meet at Freemasons Hall in Crewe Street, Shrewsbury on the second Monday of the month from October until April. Our meetings are always followed by a festive board where traditions abound, from an auction you can’t win to standing on our chairs to celebrate our lodges long history in song. At 262 we are a progressive lodge strongly supported by a rich heritage and, as in all lodges in our Province, you will receive a hearty and friendly welcome.
