The Shropshire Combined Services Lodge No 9988 was consecrated by the Provincial Grand Master for Shropshire, R.W.Bro Roger Brentnall Pemberton, at The Masonic Hall, Crewe Street, Shrewsbury, on Saturday 18th January 2020, forming the 36th Lodge in the Masonic Province of Shropshire. Following the consecration, W.Bro David John Hedley was installed as Primus Master by W.Bro Adam Craig Teasdale and he then invested the Lodges first Officers. The Temple and Festive Board was full with over 140 Brethren in the Temple and 118 Dining at the Festive Board. There was 38 of the 45 Founders in attendance and all were presented with their Founders jewels by the Provincial Grand Master.
The Lodge has been formed to combine some of the Military traditions and comradeship into the normal masonic fabric of a Lodge and to provide a unique and enjoyable experience for all concerned. It is open to all ranks of all the Armed Forces, including both Active and Retired Servicemen and Territorials. It will initiate, pass and raise candidates and hold its Installation meeting at The Masonic Hall, Crewe Street, Shrewsbury and shall hold regular meetings on the 3rd Saturday in January (Installation), the 3rd Saturday in May, the third Saturday in August and the 4th Saturday in November. The Lodge is to be peripatetic and will hold its meetings by dispensation throughout the Province and in other neighbouring Provinces, of which it has members, however, the Installation meeting will always be held in Crewe Street.
The Lodge has chosen to support as its main Charity The Battle Back Centre which was established in Lilleshall in 2011 following a £27 million investment by The Royal British Legion and was established to support wounded and injured service personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and as part of a wider £50 million commitment to the defence recovery programme. The aim of the centre is to help ensure the best possible recovery for the Armed Forces community, whether it’s returning to duty or successfully transitioning to civilian life.
As well as continuing to support wounded, injured and sick service personnel, more recently they have expanded their service with the introduction of wellbeing courses for veterans.
The Lodge will put our wives, partners and families at the forefront of all aspects of our meetings, events and festivities. This is to ensure that we offer a family based community, which draws on the support and encouragement we as Freemasons’ receive from our families and loved ones during our journey in Freemasonry.
This is a unique Lodge within the Masonic Province of Shropshire and we look to evolve and progress in how we practice our ceremonies and social events, so that we fully engage and embrace the Military aspect as the core DNA of the Lodge while not detracting from the principles and tenets of Freemasonry.
