Lodge Profile
The Castle Lodge, Bridgnorth was consecrated on 30th May, 1876. Initially, meetings were in the Crown Hotel, Bridgnorth. A banquet (in white tie and tails) was held in the Agricultural Building (Woolworths) after each meeting. We currently meet in Alveley whilst we continue to search for a new Bridgnorth ‘home’.
We are a very friendly Lodge, smaller than many in Shropshire, so members and visitors have plenty of opportunities to get fully involved in our meetings and ceremonies. We welcome visiting Freemasons, who often enjoy a Castle Lodge evening enough to return regularly. Some even become joining members. Our current Lodge banner was presented at the 1976 Centenary of The Castle Lodge. Some of our most experienced members were there, whilst some of our youngest members weren’t yet born.
Our meeting consists of a ceremony or Freemasonry-related presentation, followed by other Lodge business. This is followed by a formal meal, ‘The Festive Board’, combining formal toasts and Masonic customs with informal chat and sharing of Masonic knowledge.
We collect and contribute to many national charitable projects along with all Freemasons Lodges. We also enjoy helping local organisations and projects, collecting and donating straight to many community schemes and groups in Bridgnorth and the surrounding area. This enables us to emulate the charitable aims of our founders-The first charity provided by The Castle Lodge was in 1875, when members donated £11, 13s to provide, make and distribute bread and soup to the hungry in Bridgnorth.
We hold a number of social events during our calendar, with the aim of bringing the families of our members together. As these are ‘non-Masonic’, we often invite potential members and their families- for those thinking of joining, you are welcome. These include a ‘Spring Lunch’, at which the wives and partners of our members and former members are the guests of honour, a Christmas meal party and an annual Church service each May. For our members we also hold a more informal meeting each month called ‘Lodge of Instruction’. Members practise parts of the ceremonies or roles which they are not currently involved in, prepare and share their Masonic knowledge and make Masonic progress amongst like-minded friends in a supportive, relaxed atmosphere.
