Lodge Profile

Fitz Alan Lodge No 1432 was consecrated on 21st June 1873 and is one of 36 Masonic lodges in the Province of Shropshire warranted by the United Grand Lodge of England. Fitz Alan Lodge is the daughter lodge of The Lodge of St Oswald No 1124. These two Lodges joined together to have the Oswestry Freemason’s Hall (Roft Street, Oswestry) built. The foundation stone was laid on 17th October 1901 and we still meet here today!

Our meetings are held monthly, usually on the third Thursday of each month from October to April inclusive.

The evening begins at 1800h with a Ceremony or an educational presentation followed by other Lodge business. This is followed at about 2000h by a formal meal called the Festive Board, and the evening normally ends by about 2200h. Our Festive Boards are well renowned around the Province and beyond for our joviality; usually involving a lot of singing, laughter and knocking on the tables (the term Viking lodge has been used, which we are quite proud of).

Rehearsals for Ceremonies are held normally on the Tuesday evening before each meeting, and Brethren who are involved are very much encouraged to attend. Jointly with our mother lodge, we hold the Harlech Lodge of Instruction. New members are included early on, and most follow a well-structured progression which ultimately will lead them to become Worshipful Master of their respective Lodge for a year. Such is the quality, members of the Lodge of Instruction have been called on to perform particular works at lodges around the province.

In time, Brethren will be encouraged to visit other Lodges, perhaps join other Orders and/or do other work according to their inclination and abilities.

In addition to Masonic meetings, the Lodge holds social events and informal gatherings, and often supports those held by other lodges and the Province. Partners and friends are often welcomed to these. Money raised by the Lodge is donated to its own charities, to the Shropshire funds and also to the national Masonic charities, which give impressive donations to many worthy causes.

Above all, we enjoy our Masonry and the Fellowship and Friendship it brings.
