Lodge Profile
The Wrekin Lodge was consecrated in 1902, its founders were members of the Shropshire Society in London and its purpose was to provide a place for Shropshire Freemasons to enjoy their Freemasonry in London. Our Centenary was celebrated in 2002 when R. W. Bro. Dr Gordon Telford Haysey who was then Provincial Grand Master was Worshipful Master.
As a London Lodge, the Wrekin was administered directly by United Grand Lodge which had responsibility for most Lodges meeting within 10 miles of Charing Cross but this task was transferred to Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London, which was consecrated in 2003.
The Lodge meets at Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, London in February, April and November. The Installation Meeting is held in February.
Since 1977 the Lodge has at the invitation of the Provincial Grand Master and on the payment of fees for a Dispensation held its September meeting at one of the principal Masonic Halls in the Province when, if possible, the Ceremony of Initiation is performed.
Since the Lodge’s consecration, we have endeavoured to maintain a close relationship with the Province and have been privileged to have the strong support of the Provincial Grand Master and the Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge who attend the February and September meetings. Additionally, as the April meeting is held on the day before the investiture meetings of Grand Lodge and Supreme Grand Chapter brethren (together with their supporters) who are due to receive appointments or promotions are welcome to attend and participate.
The Lodge is delighted to receive visitors, particularly those from Shropshire and would be even happier should they consider becoming joining members (a preferential joining fee is applicable to Shropshire Masons).
As a London Lodge we are encouraged to support the charitable programmes of Metropolitan Grand Lodge but due to the close relationship we have with the Province we also endeavour to support the Provincial Festival to the best of our ability.
Unlike Provincial Masons, those in London receive promotions to London Grand Rank and subsequently to Senior London Grand Rank which equates to Provincial Warden. Metropolitan Grand Lodge has a number of active ranks similar to those on the Province but no past ranks.
The Wrekin Lodge has a very close relationship with All Saints with Benefactum Chapter No. 1716 and most members have been exalted into the Holy Royal Arch with this London Chapter which meets in April and October.
Our membership is geographically widespread, Summonses are sent from Ireland to Australia, South Africa, the United States and Shropshire as well as London and the Home Counties. We do not have a Lodge of Instruction or even a rehearsal, every meeting is a ‘first’.
We have adopted the best traditions of the Province as well as developing our own but the most important follows the statement of the Founders that the Wrekin Lodge was open for Shropshire Freemasons and their friends, at the close of the evening we raise our glasses in the Shropshire Toast:
“To all friends round the Wrekin”
